It’s waiting.
Waiting for more time. More money. Fewer responsibilities. Perfect weather.
But life doesn’t pause. And neither should your adventures.
Because the connections and memories you, your family, and your friends will talk about might just come from a weekend trip you almost didn’t take.

Live out your weekend wanderlust.
Make this the year of the mini escape. The secret? Micro-trips with macro impact. Weekend warriors are trading constant grinding then spending weekends on coach potato binges for 48-hour road trips that lead to exploring canyons, coastlines, quirky small towns, and even historical hideaways.
Summer Planning Starts Now
While weekend trips keep the year exciting, start planting seeds for summer now. You might already have a list of places you loved and want to revisit. Plus, weekend trips help identify what kind of destinations your family vibes with when you want to explore new destinations, like epic national parks, cute small towns or fascinating city museums.
Packing Like a Pro (Even on Weekends)
Let’s be real: when you’re packing for a family trip — whether it’s a weekend road trip or a full-on summer vacation — the chaos is real. But after years of trial and (hilarious) error, I’ve perfected a packing method that keeps us sane, on budget, and ready to deal with some of the unexpected. Whether it’s two days or ten, this formula never fails:

My Family Packing Formula:
- 1 backpack per person (zip-top pouches inside for outfits).
- I use color-coded packing cubes for each family member. It keeps outfits organized and cuts time rifling through bags.
- Let them choose something to read or play that fits in the bag for the road.
- Pro tip: Kids love and need ownership. Let them pack with a printable checklist.
- A “Go Bag” with travel toiletries, meds, sunscreen, and wipes — always stocked and ready. This keeps things simple, and lightweight.
- A reusable tote or small duffel with:
- Travel-sized toiletries
- Mini first-aid kit
- Sunscreen & bug spray
- Wipes, tissues, extra hand sanitizer
- Travel snacks + a couple electrolyte packs
- Keep it stocked and stored = one less thing to think about every time you go.
Snack-Smart, Save Big
Forget overpriced rest stop snacks or too much fast food drive thru. Here’s how we do it:
- Your DIY trail mix in zip bags or reusable pouches
- Granola bars, string cheese, fruit leather
- A refillable water bottle for every traveler (bonus: eco friendly no single-use plastic)
- A thermos with hot cocoa, tea or coffee = road trip cozy vibes

The “Essentials Kit”
A separate pouch that lives in my car year-round, filled with:
- Extra socks and undies for young kids
- A lightweight change of clothes (rolled up)
- A mini towel or microfiber blanket
- Trash bags, band-aids, and tissues (because… parenting)
